Meet Sherilyn Guerrero

We recently connected with Sherilyn Guerrero and have shared our conversation below.

Sherilyn, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I keep my creativity alive by keeping an open eye and not just an open mind. I think creativity comes in people recognizing the “in-betweens” in the environment around them. I started to hear music in a different way the day I created off of how I felt from what I saw. I started to experience the art I was making. Creativity for me becomes at its peak when I am wanting to express something I know is to harsh in words, when I know I do not have the words to express it. I think that is why I connect with dance, music, and photography. I think as long as I keep feeling empathy and an open eye to the environments, I am in it allows me to always have a pathway to create. Have you ever been standing and looking at the world that goes from peripheral to peripheral and beyond… then you put your camera up and see it through a lens and it shows you a specific frame only you can see. Getting that still shot can really be worth a thousand words but the beautiful thing is you know the specific words that stand behind it. When you dance improve no one knows what it was but you, your moves are yours and what you want to say is indefinite. Call me a sap, but I was the girl in high school walking down the hallway with my headphones thinking I’m in the next John Mayer music video. My point is music, brings me into a whole other world where I can find someone singing lyrics that I do not have the guts to say but can instantly find a new perspective on something that low and behold someone else had. That snowballs into me thinking creativity is endless, anywhere and more relatable then you think. To conclude, I keep my creativity alive by being open, looking up every now and then at the world we are in, and always looking around to what is there already. When you aren’t searching for more you see everything you need is right in front of you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have done the whole clothing brand thing; I have done the 9-5 and there is nothing that truly excites me more than creating content. Whether it be making videos or taking pictures. I feel like growing up as a Famous World-Renowned Wrestler’s Daughter my life and family has always been in the spotlight. I have taken a liking to being behind the camera and making people look good. I find myself to have gained so much experience in the hospitality business that combining that, professionalism, and content creation gives me the ultimate background to create someone’s experience of truly being seen and feeling the best they can when looking back on camera. My goal with content creation is to create memories and footage that people look at to feel nostalgia, euphoria and confidence. I love performing and training in dance but there is nothing better than getting both perspectives and helping others see what I see. I am wanting to network ultimately with other creatives and make not only the City of Houston stand out more in the cracks and crannies but the people as well.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would have to say emotional intelligence when working with other people who maybe you have just met or are having trouble keeping business from personal. I believe being empathetic is a strong transferrable quality when being behind the camera and knowing how to make someone feel comfortable showing themselves on camera. Lastly, working professionally in photography and hospitality has helped me grow to show up professionally and result-driven to what I need to create and achieve.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I think it is very easy to get overwhelmed when handling content creation projects and the best thing to do is stay organized. When being a videographer or photographer independently means you set your own rules, boundaries, and schedules at the most. I always stay organized with a planner for work and with personal things, and keep on track with revolving everything else around that. Videography and photography is more then just using the camera but editing your work so I make sure to include that into my schedule. When I feel stressed or overwhelmed I remember to take care of myself by taking a deep breathe and reanalyzing my priorities realistically with the time and resources I have. Always remember it is going to be okay.
